2001 Mayoral Announcement
Housed and Homeless in Seattle
|
Soundway West, located in West Seattle, is the most ecologically diverse parcel in the Duwamish Greenbelt. These seven acres include 28 species of native plants. Forty-one species of birds have been recorded there. The residence of Cooper's Hawks and Pygmy owls is indicative of a natural Migratory bird pathway. Yet Greg Nickels has decided that this is the site that must be developed in order to achieve "city-wide goals." As usual, none of it is borne out in the evidence. Over 1,865 new housing units are already proposed, or in process in the area, well exceeding goals in an already healthy housing market. Nickels would destroy this most diverse and crucial habitat by destroying at least 4 out of 7 acres, including wetland, by selling all seven of it to the highest bidder for development. This belies his support for the environment altogether. This would not be happening if a true mayor were in office. Please join me, as well as local community groups such as the Nature Consortium, rTrip, and EarthCorps and 300 residents who in 6 week's time signed a petition in protest of this blatant trampling of our precious environment to satisfy yet one more "as yet unannounced" developer. This issue is of major concern to the Riverview Community Council. For more information about Soundway please visit: Soundways.org
